Artefact #4 second draft

After showing my fourth artefact to a group of volunteers I found that the interface was quite confusing and they didn't feel that what they wanted from the application was properly reflected, so I simplified the menu's and removed some of the original options to give a better user experience.

Home landing page when app is launched
Main Navigation Page
Ticket purchase and information page
Calendar page, dates with events are circled. Tapping on an event will lead to the ticket purchase/info page for that event.
Offers page. Each link will bring the user to a new page with relevant offers.
Current track page. To break up the pages more I decided to combine this as a landing/menu page to find the previous tracks and also to request songs.

Socialise page/menu. Although a check-in service wasn't an overly desired option within the application, a rewards service was, this would work through the check-in so it has been included in the social menu.

Artefact #4

As I have been researching QR codes as a means of interacting for club nights I began to think about how they could be used in the environment such as allowing for image uploads or downloads. This lead me on to think of how an application could be used to promote a club and increase interactivity. I carried out a short survey to find out what would attract users to download and use an application for a venue. From the results which can be found here I designed a hypothetical application which would be used on smart phones. Generally people were most attracted to the idea of being able to purchase tickets, get discounts and offers and rewards for attending frequently. The least desirable option was a blog with downloadable content, which only one person wanted from the application.

Sky Arts #2

Carrying on from the previous Arts Ident I decided that I'd like to look more at After Effects and how I can manipulate imagery to create something new. From my research project I had been looking more at QR codes and I wanted to try and incorporate these into moving image in my research project and so extended this to my client work too. Through my research I didn't come across any moving imagery in advertising where the entire peice is composed of a barcode and manipulated. I did however come across artist Scott Blake who creates portraits from barcodes, which can be scanned and link to interactive art peices.

Sky Arts #2

Carrying on from the previous Arts Ident I decided that I'd like to look more at After Effects and how I can manipulate imagery to create something new. From my research project I had been looking more at QR codes and I wanted to try and incorporate these into moving image in my research project and so extended this to my client work too. I personally haven't seen anything like this before used in advertising where the entire peice is composed of a barcode

Monday

Sky arts test piece

Testing how layer masks work with existing footage, uploaded in very low quality as was familiarising myself with different codecs and formats.
I'm intending to film different painting techniques and place them behind the sky arts logo for one of the final peices.

Thursday

Sky Arts first peice

This is the first ident I created in response to the open brief for Sky Arts. I used light painting/photoshop to create a 20 second clip in which the only stipulation was that the logo must form no longer than 12 seconds into the clip and hold for 8 seconds. I'm pleased with how it turned out although I know it's not perfect.

Tuesday

Ideas for settings

I've been thinking about where I want to set my lightbox and how it's going to interact with the surroundings, I rediscovered these idents used to promote The Warehouse Project, a seasonal night club in Manchester, for it's 2010 season.

This made me think of the stairs of Newton which are lit up at night, which could be a prime location to set up.

Sunday

Origami

Experimenting with origami to find some inspiration for some digital transitions for my research project and also I may use origami for one of my Sky Arts designs.

Wednesday

ManVsMachine

Looking into ManVsMachine's previous work I found that they specialize in idents, and also did work for Sky Arts. Their work involves a lot of digital compositing which unfortunately I don't have the skills to create, but the idea of building something and rewinding it is feasible.

Tuesday

Apparati Effimeri, 3d Mapping

This isn't an interactive 3d installation, however the final example shown I feel could be very effective used in a club environment, if a live artist drew the surroundings to highlight as the music played, then the surroundings moved and react to sound.

Interactive Shadow Visuals

skia @ mediaopera from muk on Vimeo.

Skia by Andreas Haider, an interactive shadow which mimic the users movements, then when the user stands still, bends and warps into different shapes. Using an infrared camera to detect the persons, openFrameworks software, processes and manipulates the shadow.

Coldplay Wristband audience interaction

Recently Coldplay have been using wristbands which are controlled through radio signals as part of their show at arena gigs, shown below in use at Wembley during the X Factor final and in the video, an audience member at the Glasgow concert demonstrates how the audience experience is enhanced by the bands which create a sense of togetherness and interaction with the show.

An interesting and novel way of creating participation and a communal feel for audience members. This technology could be pushed further to react with all notes and beats automatically, or through tracking of position and different colours implanted within the lights could be used to display images when filmed from above.

Thursday

Experiments for client project

For my short for Sky Arts I'm looking at experimental ways of mixing colour as an initial exploration,

Charlie XCX - Nuclear Seasons

I love the effects used in this video - really inspiring and easily transferrable to my projects.

StartUp factory report

While looking into what I wanted to create I was looking at production companies and as I was researching I realised I much prefer to analyze these companies rather than to create my own. Which brought me to think of magazines and how they are changing with the new digital medias. We were shown a digital magazine in a tutorial which was an app in which the articles were clickable and they brought up videos and other media. This is the kind of route I'd like to go down with my company, I already have knowledge of these as I read digital issues myself so research will be to look more in depth at these existing apps and how they work.

For my digital magazine I'd like to focus on culture - the arts and music, as there is so much interactive content which could be included it seems like the obvious choice as that's also where my interests lie.

Research project

I've been reading more to get more depth on my research topic cause I'm really struggling to find a question. I looked into how colours make you feel by reading a journal about an experiment tested on university students which has given me some inspiration. I also looked at the Technoetic journals following on from Simon's lecture on the research project. I found some really interesting articles regarding projects which experiment with perception and interaction and I'm going to read more into those tomorrow. I really want to create some visuals for my project which can be used in club environments, looking at people currently doing this like Kenzo Digital and Ali Demirel, amongst others.
